It's time to vote again for the Dj Mag top 100 dj's (http://www.djmag.com/) getting votes for this is a huge deal to any traveling dj.
Sander Van Doorn Judge Jules Mauro Picotto Carl Cox Deadmau5 (more a producer rather than a dj, but had an amazing year... and is a friend of the wifey's)

Armin Van Buuren is a great DJ although I've never seen him live.

My vote this years goes out to:
1. AvB ( yeah... I know....every year)
Listen to his live mix on last months Mixmag covermount CD from Ministry and see if you still feel that way...
I don't know... I don't want to speak ill of other performers, but seriously... his sets are big song with breakdown, half ass mixing, big song with breakdown, half ass mixing, big song with breakdown.... etc etc. There is no feeding the crowd energy, just a bunch of big hits. While that is awesome when djing in a pub, it's not really something a top flight dj should be proud of. If you listen to the mix I noted here from him and can actually dance through the whole thing then cheers to you... I've been at some of the same venues as he is and the crowd just stands there watching him play... no emotion other than cheering the big song. A DJ is a performer, and when you say a dj is amazing it should be based on his talent.. not on the fact that he was sent better music than another and managed to get it into a mix (without any skill doing so). To me saying Armin is the best dj in the world is like saying you feel a priest is the best tank in the game because you saw an epic geared lvl 70 shadow priest solo Stiches while semi-afk. I look at the art in a different way than others and I suppose that is unfair.
That said, we all have our opinion... I realize VP is not basing his opinion on this... I just happened to grab his quote.

Varren, I saw him many times live. All I can say is that I agree with you that he's not that great techincally. However, the poll isn't really about skills. If it was, then James Zabiela should win every year. That man is insane! Armin however have made Trance music very popular with his radio show. Maybe not so much in Europe, but definitely in the States. Plus you got to say that's one good looking man behind the decks!

I beg to differ. I think it's about the whole package, skill is certainly part of that package. DJ of the year should be someone who has had a great year, and not just $$$, but does DJing with his heart, and is always trying to go the extra mile for his fans. A DJ should captivate the audience and make them want to move. Connecting with the fans and being able to fire them up and energize them is what being a DJ is all about. amirite? Make it fresh, make it hot, and make me want to move, and they will get my vote.

Tharas,
Maybe I should clarify - I really Really like a lot of his stuff. His music is chill, catchy, and very fun. However, he's not really a DJ as Hode aptly describes it above. For clarification, I listen to BT's Mercury and Solace a LOT - I love it along with staples like "Never Gonna Come Back Down" and several other tracks from Movement in Still Life - good, solid album.
Comparing BT to a DJ like Oakenfold (10 years ago), Paul Van Dyk, or some of the people listed above is like comparing Britney Spears/NSync to the Beatles.
Sure, Britney and N'Sync had some catchy, enjoyable music (I believe BT even helped produce one of N'Sync's hits...can't remember which one)...but nothing groundbreaking, and definitely not technical wizards.

Waaaaaaaaa?
I've seen BT live, with a real band and real instruments, in a tiny club in SF with like 200 people. The shit he does is amazing.
Yeah,... although that is a Live PA... different than a DJ set, although similar. Deadmau5 started out his djing this year doing Live PA's and morphed it into Djing.
Liam Howlett from The Prodigy is a great example of this... does amazing Live PA's, absolute SHIT djing (even tho he professes that djing is easy and that he would be the best in the world at doing it)

I liked this live PA stuff a lot then. I've seen Oakenfold and van Dyk in huge venues, solid sets, and I liked them well enough, but I'm more of a live-performance guy I guess, and definitely more trance than hard house, which probably explains a lot of it. (I saw Orbital about 4-5 years ago. Good god, amazing. "Belfast" I could listen too on endless loop for days...)
Also, BT had Thomas Dolby open for him, which was just hysterical in its own right.
